Fat Shogun - Japanese Peruvian eatery in the heart of Jakarta

Ever wonder what a marriage of Peruvian-Japanese cuisine would taste like? We were too until we finally visited Fat Shogun. Even before we visited this place, we thought that Fat Shogun is just another Japanese food establishment, because of the Japanese name (Shogun was the title of Japan leader back in the day) and some pics of it’s sake cocktail we saw in Instagram.
However it all changed when we finally saw the menu, where ceviche, tostados, pollo a la brassa, and some other Peruvian dishes are listed, then we realized this place serves Peruvian-Japanese fusion cuisine. And luckily that day we came to visit this place with some friends, so we can try a lot of menus without making our belly super full from finishing everything by ourselves 😛.
This place is decorated with modern Japanese theme. Japanese shrine gate and some murals showing comics of the iconic shogun takes place in this place. The furniture is mainly modern styled, with marble table and some round booth seating. The view in this place is also pretty good as there is a big glass on one side of the place that allows you to see the mega kuningan view.

Another thing that we like about this place is the outdoor area which we think is very instagenic and very cool for having a drink with friends after work.  Ms. Button can’t help herself to take a picture here while we are waiting for our foods to come.

For our visit here, Ms. Button is wearing a black ploi dress with bralette to give a sexy look, paired with platform sandals. She thinks that this sexy look is just right to wear when you are visiting this very nice place to have an intimate lunch, romantic dinner, or a night out with your friends.
After almost 30 mins of taking picture (yes it’s quite long, we know 😝😆), we then come back to our table and friends where our orders are already present. Here is what we ordered :
  • Shogun Sake : Fat Shogun's specialty sake. It's homemade, so the taste is smoother and a bit lighter than other commercial sake. Served with lemon, which gives a sour-fresh taste to the sake

  • ·         Wakame salad : cold seaweed with vinegar, salt & sugar. The seaweed is fresh, and the acidity is just right to wake our appetite.

  • ·        Spicy Garlic Edamame : Edamame sautéed with garlic, chilli, and soy sauce which gives a nice aroma.

  • ·         Tuna over crispy rice : Spicy tuna served over crispy rice cake. This is so good, the tuna is so fresh, and the crispy rice is also very well seasoned. Though a minor setback is the rice cake is not so crispy, probably because it was pre cooked.

  • ·         Salmon Tostados : Salmon sashimi served over tortilla with creamy spicy green sauce on top (we can taste wasabi is present in the sauce). This dish is also good, as creamy and crunchy texture are both present, while the fish is also very fresh.

  • ·         Loco Maguro roll : sushi roll with salmon inside, and spicy tuna on top.

  • ·         Tiradito : very similar to ceviche, but the sauce here is red pepper sauce which is  bit spicy.
  • ·         Trufa Wagyu Nigiri : Aburi sliced wagyu on top of sushi rice, with black truffle paste. It is one of the highlight of the orders, as the wagyu beef is so tender and black truffle paste add another level of goodness to this dish
  • ·         Pollo a la brassa : Roasted chicken with a lot of herbs and spices. The chicken is cooked perfectly! However Mr. Bacon thinks that the spices and herbs is a bit too strong.
  • ·         Gyutan truffle donburi : Ox tounge cooked with truffle sauce on top of a bowl of rice, served with poached egg. This is another highlight of the lunch. The ox tongue is so tender, cooked perfectly that it doesn’t lose it’s original taste. The sauce is sweet savory and very good as well. A bit of disappointment is the sauce is lacking the truffle taste, and the poached is not so perfect.

All in all, we like this place. Whether it is for a lunch, romantic dinner, or a night out having drinks with friends, this place can accommodate them all. Mr. Bacon’s rating for this place is 4 out of 5 which is BACONLY GOOD.
So we have come to the end of this post. Hope you enjoy reading and see you in the next blog post. Don’t forget to follow our instagram account @baconandbutton for daily updates of where to eat well and what to wear to make you look good. BACONANDBUTTON out.
